Mental Funks And Notebooks

Hey all. Just writing quickly before I hit the hay. I was in a wicked bad mental funk the past few weeks. I don’t know why, I just felt really down in the dumps. Maybe it was the news of my friend dating some bitch that I know will break his heart eventually. Maybe it’s just the seasons playing tricks with my brain. Maybe I just have been so damn bored during this Winter Break that my brain went into a megafunk. And that funk made my writing really suffer the past week. I actually missed a writing deadline because of it. I hate when I do that! But I’m back and raring to go.

I think the turning point was cleaning out my car and buying a 3 subject notebook.

Okay let me explain the last part. Deep in the inner recesses of my brain, there’s a comedy writer struggling to break out and go crazy on the world. This is also the part of me that wants to do a webcomic or at least do live comedy. It’s an illogical dream that I’ve put on the back burner for a while now, but hey, better late than never right? So the 3 subject notebook is basically taking an old comedy method that was done by Phil Hartman. I read an article from like 1991 (what? I was up late and researching random stuff) where he said he had a 3 subject notebook basically just with lists upon lists of ideas. And basically the gist is to pretty much think of some numbers, get the result of the said thing and bam! There ya go — some inspiration!

So why comedy? Well for one thing, I’m a comedy nerd. Well sketch comedy mostly. I don’t mind standup but I like the nature of sketch comedy where it’s basically a full realized character and performance. Also, I enjoy making people laugh. Even if half the time it’s unintentional, I still enjoy it. I’d willingly make an ass of myself if it made at least one person chuckle. So why not, right?

Also thought about doing a webseries about all things SNL. I dunno if I could pull that off because I can get really opinionated about certain cast members that seem to be rather popular these days. But I really love teaching people about the history of the show and I really love to talk about it and have reasonable discussions on things I disagree about. Should I? Should I not?

So anyways, that’s what I’ve been up to lately. How about you guys?
